Navi Pillay, born Navanethem Pillay in 1941 in Durban, South Africa, grew up under the oppressive legal framework of apartheid. Facing intersectional barriers of race, gender, and economic hardship, she pursued legal studies at the University of Natal. In 1967, Pillay broke major historical barriers by becoming the first non-white woman to establish a legal practice in Natal Province, setting out on a lifelong mission to use the law as an instrument of justice for the oppressed.
