Boeing came within a single aircraft of making the Boeing 747SP's numbers work, and then discovered that selling that aircraft was no longer the real problem. The short-body jumbo had been designed to make exceptionally long, relatively thin routes viable, but by the time its production run was nearing its end, the economics of doing that with four engines had begun to change dramatically.
