Deaths due to injuries on the job happen in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut at a higher rate than any other province or territory, according to the 2026 Report on Work Fatality and Injury Rates in Canada.
Nine deaths occurred on the job in the two territories in 2024, the most recent year for data.
Six of those nine deaths happened when a plane carrying employees crashed near Fort Smith. It was on the way to Rio Tinto’s Diavik mine, which has since shut down permanently.
