Like many aging rock bands, nu-metal veterans Slipknot have a Ship of Theseus quality to them. A decent chunk of the classic lineup has departed, most recently longtime DJ Sid Wilson, who was kicked out about a month ago for reportedly being a jerk. Before that, a decade after taking over the kit from founding drummer Joey Jordison, Jay Weinberg got the ax in 2023, which left him "heartbroken and blindsided." But Slipknot are more equipped for membership changes than some bands, owing to the gro

Much like his old Saddle Creek labelmate Conor Oberst, longtime Cursive frontman Tim Kasher is a director now. A couple of years ago, Kasher made his directorial debut with an independent found-footage horror feature called Who's Watching. I haven't seen it yet, but you can imagine that a film about a creepy, obsessive stalker might have certain resonance with some of Kasher's lyrics. Kasher also did the music for Who's Watching, and a soundtrack album is coming next month. Today, Cursive share

Argentine duo Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso never cease to surprise. They've gone viral for their NPR Tiny Desk concert, dressed up like babies with Jack Black, and collabed with Robyn. This past week the experimental pair when on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge and performed the most unlikely epic mashup: Spice Girls' "Wannabe" and Dutch prog rock band Focus' "Hocus Pocus." Synthpop wizard Vince Clarke was responsible for some of the most indelible jams of the early '80s, but he took a while to find a stable artistic partnership. Clarke wrote most of the song's on Depeche Mode's classic 1981 debut Speak & Spell, then left the group. He formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet, but they only released two (excellent) LPs before breaking up. Finally, Clarke looked for collaborators by placing an ad in NME, and that's how he found the singer Andy Bell. They became the duo Erasur

We're nearing the release of one last opus from Athens, Georgia's Olivia Tremor Control, the psych-pop cult favorites and a core fixture of the Elephant 6 collective. Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart, the Lennon and McCartney of the OTC, are no longer with us. But before they died — Doss in 2012, Hart in 2024 — they began work on a double album called The Same Place. Their bandmates finished the 27-track project, and it's coming out next month, the band's first album in 27 years. The post The Oliv

PinkPantheress is now the type of artist who wins MTV Video Music Awards, though not the kind where the actual awards get televised. Last night, PinkPantheress took home her first-ever moonman trophy, winning the non-broadcast Best Art Direction award for the "Stateside" remix with Zara Larsson. She was in the building for the ceremony, striking poses with peers like Charli XCX. The post PinkPantheress Wins Her First VMA, Remixes Tinashe appeared first on Stereogum.

Right now, I'm about halfway through a great three-hour interview with Have Heart/Fiddlehead frontman Pat Flynn on Mutually Assured Destruction/Eliminators frontman Ace Stallings' hardcore podcast Forum Of Passion. It's a great listen. Flynn really knows how to talk about his own life and hardcore music at the same time, eloquently talking about how it feels to be a middle-aged professional — he's a high-school history teacher in his everyday life — who's still knee-deep in this stuff. Flynn has

Back in April, the influential Swedish singer/rapper hybrid Yung Lean and the French producer GENER8ION went viral with their "Storm" video. Directed by Romain Gavras, the video stars Yung Lean as the bully at a fancy, futuristic boarding school. In the lengthy final scene, he wears a suit and tie and stands on bleachers amidst a large group of dancers, also wearing suits and ties. Intense choreography ensues. Gavras captures the whole sequence from a wide angle, framing a stoic, smoking Yung Le

There was a George Michael tribute on the VMAs tonight. It makes sense. Michael was an MTV icon, one of the most important artists of the network's first decade, so any time they want to honor him, they should. Wanna feel old? It's been 17 years since Kanye West stormed the stage to interrupt Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. There have been many more Taylor Swift moments at the VMAs since then, including quite a few shots of Swift in the audience, reacting to what's happening onstage. She's also the most honored artist in VMAs history, with 30 Moon Persons to her name. The post VMAs 2026: Taylor Swift Receives The Inaugural Artist Director Honors, Debuts “Patient Zer

At tonight's VMAs, Nirvana were the recipients of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the lifetime-achievement honor traditionally given out to whichever famous artist MTV can convince to show up. It's the first time a rock band has received the Video Vanguard since Duran Duran in 2003, and it comes in the same year MTV dropped a rock category from the ceremony for the first time in its 37-year history. Kacey Musgraves has been paying tribute to Dolly Parton a lot since the country music icon's passing a few weeks ago. Tonight, she did so onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards. After an intro featuring archival footage of Parton performing her classic ballad "I Will Always Love You" on TV, Musgraves grabbed the torch to sing the song herself. It was a dignified, highly emotional performance. The post VMAs 2026: Kacey Musgraves Honors Dolly Parton With “I Will Always Love You” appeared first on

It's been a huge year for Madonna. Confessions II, her long-awaited, much-hyped sequel to 2005's Confessions On A Dance Floor, was rapturously received — including by Stereogum readers, who voted "Danceteria" to the top of our Song Of The Summer poll. Any perceived beef with her artistic descendant Charli XCX was squashed with a remix and a pack of smokes, and Charli's pal Troye Sivan paid homage with a "Music" sample on his new single "Party." Madge has been everywhere from Coachella to the Wor
