The News/Media Alliance submitted comments on September 25 in response to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) August 19 request for comments on its Proposed Enforcement Policy Statement Regarding Personalized Pricing.

NMA joined two amicus briefs this month, led by RCFP, in two separate appeals brought by the NYT in NYT v. Dep’t of Defense in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

News publications all across California will run a full page ad declaring that the journalism industry is unified in support of AB-2222, the Community NEWS Act, a measure that would create refundable employment tax credits for qualifying local news organizations that hire and retain journalists across the state.

The News/Media Alliance joined a group of national and state news organizations in a letter  calling for California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign AB-2222, a "news-neutral" journalism employment tax credit. 

Section 338 authorizes the President to exclude articles of a foreign country from importation where that country maintains or increases discrimination against U.S. commerce, and the President deems exclusion consistent with the public interest and the interests of the United States.

On August 14, the Maryland Tax Court struck down the state’s Digital Advertising Gross Revenues Tax, enacted in 2020. Across multiple rulings, the court found the tax unlawful and unconstitutional, violating the Internet Tax Freedom Act, the Dormant Commerce Clause, the Due Process Clause, and the First Amendment.

The update removes the requirement that a “news website” cover “a broad range of news on all subjects and activities and is not limited to any specific subject matter,” clearly allowing subject matter-focused sites, such as those covering sports, finance, or culture, to be registered under the option.

With today’s markup, Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) advanced bipartisan work to protect children from addictive and harmful practices perpetuated by large online platforms, while preserving beneficial access to high-quality journalism.

The News/Media Alliance commends the Massachusetts Senate for the effort to protect a free press and will continue to work with the Massachusetts News Paper Association and other journalism advocates to push the measure forward as House and Senate leadership negotiate a final public records package.
