I have volunteered at the Honolulu Zoo and witnessed the dedication of the animal keepers, but good care and a meaningful life are not the same thing. Asian elephants Mari and Vaigai are extraordinary, sentient beings. Their lives have an intrinsic value far greater than that of an exhibit in our human world.
