Vanja Matijevec, 79, March 3
Vanja Matijevec belonged to a generation of Slovenian alpinists who pushed onto some of the biggest walls in the Himalayas, but one of the defining moments of his climbing life came when he chose not to summit.
On his legendary 1979 expedition to Everest, Matijevec gave up his own planned summit attempt to help Stipe Božić, Stane Belak and Ang Phu, who had become stranded above 8,000 meters during their descent. Božić later remembered Matijevec’s selflessness as help
