South Africa has become the kind of smartphone market global brands cannot afford to misunderstand. Mobile already sits at the centre of the country’s digital life. Stats SA says 85.6% of households access the internet through mobile broadband, while ICASA recorded 82.7 million smartphone subscriptions in 2024, up more than 10% in a year. Those numbers describe a market where the smartphone has become the primary way people connect to services, entertainment, work and one another.
