New Delhi: In a strong reaffirmation of the legal protection given to temple properties, the Supreme Court has held that any gift of inam land belonging to a religious institution is null and void under the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959. A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe ruled that the state government is only a custodian of such properties and has no authority to accept them as gifts, even for a public purpose such as constructing a taluk office.
