Former San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott, a Democrat, is attempting to flip California Senate District 40 in next month’s election in a closely watched race against Republican businesswoman Kristie Bruce-Lane.
Supporters of both candidates have so far poured more than $4.5 million into the race for a district that covers San Marcos, Escondido, Poway, Santee, Alpine, Fallbrook and Ramona, as well as several northern neighborhoods in the city of San Diego.
