People love lists: this is a fact beyond dispute. Lists bring order to a chaotic universe, they enable us to go shopping, and also to procrastinate (I had a friend who used to make lists of lists, which meant he never did anything other than make lists). 

Lists are also an important part of our emotional lives – how else can we make ourselves angry over nothing without lists? In a world where lists didn’t exist, we’d have to be upset by real things, like war and injustice, which could be danger
