Earth goes between the sun and Saturn once in nearly every earthly year. That’s because we take a year to orbit the sun, while Saturn takes nearly 30 years. This animation from Lowell Observatory (not to scale) shows you what “opposition” means. It means Saturn is opposite the sun as seen from Earth. So it rises when the sun sets and appears somewhere in our sky all night long. Image via Lowell Obervatory.
