The study of philosophy is powerful because you can map its insights onto any aspect of life today, just as you could a hundred or a thousand years ago. French philosopher Descartes, for example, pioneered the theory of mind-body dualism, writing "I have a clear and distinct idea of myself, in so far as I am simply a thinking, non-extended thing... and on the other hand I have a distinct idea of body... accordingly, it is certain that I am really distinct from my body, and can exist without it."
