Re “The US national debt now stands at $40 trillion” (Aug. 19): Thank you for the article on our quickly increasing national debt.
If we divide that debt by the number of people in the U.S., we find that every man, woman, child and newborn baby in this country owes $114,600 to foreign governments, insurance companies, banks and investors. The $2 trillion increase in the debt this year equals an increase of $5,730 per person.
