A few miles inside the French border, at a motorway toll plaza called Le Boulou, a crowd of French winegrowers cracked open five tanker trucks and let tens of thousands of litres of red wine run out across the tarmac. As Decanter reported at the time, they scrawled the words “wine not compliant” down the sides of the leaking trailers before letting the drivers go.
That wine was Spanish, and it was on its way to becoming French.
