Ask a married man who he feels closest to and there is a decent chance he says his wife, then attaches a small apology to it. Something like “which is probably a bit sad.” He says it the way people admit to a habit.
That apology is misplaced. His answer is the majority answer among married men, and by a wide margin. The more useful question is what he would have said if she had been out of the room.
