In their quest to find a righthanded-hitting catcher, the New York Yankees signed Mitch Garver to a minor-league deal Aug. 7 after the veteran backstop was released by the Seattle Mariners. Garver, 35, went to Tampa and the Florida Complex League for six days, then joined the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Aug. 14.
