National Eye Institute researchers have created the largest known database providing a reference for the size of individual cone photoreceptors, the cells in the retina responsible for color vision, across the lifespan. This resource will help clinicians distinguish early disease-related damage from typical aging, enabling earlier diagnosis and better tracking of whether new treatments are working at the cellular level. The work was published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
