Doctors have long advised many atrial-fibrillation patients to avoid coffee. But a 2025 randomized trial found that regular coffee drinkers assigned one caffeinated cup a day after cardioversion had a 39% lower hazard of AF or atrial-flutter recurrence than those told to avoid caffeine—47% versus 64% over six months.

For many people with atrial fibrillation, coffee has lived in the same mental drawer as alcohol, missed sleep and other suspected triggers. The logic felt plausible. Caffeine can make the heart feel faster or more noticeable, so taking it away might help keep an irregular rhythm away.
