In a 2013 experiment, mice spent two hours a day in near-total silence. To researchers’ surprise, silence—not Mozart, pup calls or white noise—was the only condition linked to increased numbers of seven-day-old immature neurons in the hippocampus, although the study did not test whether this improved memory or occurs in humans.
