Peppercorn-sized clusters of human brain cells survived in laboratory dishes for nearly six years, with some reportedly reaching seven. Despite having no body or sensory input, their molecular clocks continued to follow the timetable of human brain development—suggesting that part of the brain’s maturation schedule is written into the cells themselves.
