Scientists documented 1,121 previously unknown marine species in a single year — increasing the annual identification rate by 54 percent — yet the head of science at Ocean Census says researchers are still in a race against time, with estimates suggesting up to 90 percent of ocean species remain undiscovered.

Between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026, the Ocean Census network recorded 1,121 marine species it regarded as previously unknown to science. The result came from 13 expeditions, nine specialist workshops and work on specimens already waiting in collections.
In its 19 May announcement, the organisation described the total as a 54 percent increase in the annual identification rate. The number includes animals from shallow reefs and sea caves as well as specimens collected as deep as 6,575 metres.
