South Africa jumped ten places in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking in 2026. It rose to 54 out of 70 economies from 64 in 2025.
It had stagnated near the 60 level for a number of years. Its rank in 2022 was 60, followed by 61 in 2023 and then 60 in 2024.
Consequently, the main drivers of the improved ranking were efficiency gains. Business efficiency improved to 42 from 57 and government efficiency gained to 54 from 63.
