Ms Diene Keita, the Executive Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), said one million more midwives were needed globally by 2035 to save more than four million lives every year.
Keita said this in a statement to mark the International Day of the Midwife, emphasising the critical role of midwives in preventing avoidable maternal and newborn deaths.
