Families in parts of Limpopo are turning to mopane worms and termites as a source of food and income, with new research showing the trade is helping some households fight poverty.

The findings come from studies by University of Johannesburg Associate Professor Ndidzulafhi Innocent Sinthumule, who examined how rural communities are commercialising local insects.

His research found the trade is driven by unemployment, limited job opportunities and the need for cash in struggling villages.
