The Fermi surface of a material is, in a sense, a wanted poster for electrons. Drawn from data gathered by firing ultraviolet light at a crystal and measuring what comes back, it maps the boundary between occupied and unoccupied electronic states, a frontier whose exact shape governs whether a material conducts, insulates, magnetises, or does something stranger still. Interpreting those maps by hand has always been painstaking work, requiring deep expertise and considerable tolerance for noise.
