People who laugh before they finish telling a painful story aren’t handling it well. They’re releasing the listener from having to respond to it seriously, which is a skill they learned from people who couldn’t.

Donna’s sister told a story at our kitchen table a few years back about the time her mother locked her on the porch overnight when she was seven, in January, in a nightgown. She laughed before she got to the part about the temperature. Not a chuckle. A full, bright laugh, the kind that signals the punchline is coming, except there wasn’t one. The laugh arrived two sentences early, and the rest of us laughed with her because that’s what the laugh was asking us to do.
