Donna’s sister told a story at our kitchen table a few years back about the time her mother locked her on the porch overnight when she was seven, in January, in a nightgown. She laughed before she got to the part about the temperature. Not a chuckle. A full, bright laugh, the kind that signals the punchline is coming, except there wasn’t one.
