A seasonal patrol in Arviat seeks to mitigate conflicts between humans and wildlife as polar bears migrate from inland areas of the Kivalliq region to the sea ice on Hudson Bay.
Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. said hiring four new bear monitors to patrol the hamlet 24/7 will help decrease the safety risks posed by the apex predators as they forge towards the ice, where they spend most of their time hunting for food.
“Their role is just to patrol non-stop, and they are equipped with radios,”
