Advocacy group DignitySA has launched a legal challenge in the North Gauteng High Court seeking to decriminalise medical assistance in dying for terminally ill patients in South Africa.

The organisation, together with several supporting parties, is asking the Constitutional Court of South Africa to declare the country’s current laws prohibiting assisted dying unconstitutional and invalid.

The initiative was announced during a media briefing in Cape Town.
