Yes, the city does really audit those who’ve applied for home exemptions, which give residential property owners a pass from taxes on the first $120,000 (or $160,000 if 65 or over) of home value. And notifications can come any time, as part of a mass audit, a random spot check or because property owners have been reported as claiming an exemption they shouldn’t get.
