Super Saiyan was the go-to transformation for the Dragon Ballseries ever since Goku unlocked SSJ fighting Frieza on Namek all the way back in DBZ. With the debut of Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power, however, Dragon Ball changed the game by more or less ditching various tiers of Super Saiyan in favor of personalized transformations that are unique to different characters.
